We spend a lot of time writing about the solo lightweight backpacker, but we realize that sometimes you want some company.

The trail can get lonely, even if that’s what you’re looking for.

Sometimes you just want to experience the beauty of the outdoors with another human.

In fact, most backpackers could agree that sharing the experiences you gain on the trail is just more enjoyable with another person.

But as beautiful and exciting as outdoor experiences can be to share, resting for the night is a different story.

Truth be told so many 2 person backpacking tents cant even hold 2 people.

This makes finding the right size shelter for 2 people a frustrating experience.

What works for one might not work for the other, especially if your 2 completely different sizes.

Hammocks, on the other hand, are usually 8-9 feet long and contour to your body type.

This creates an incredibly relaxing and spacious experience for both people in the hammock.

Double hammock camping is the most accommodating way for 2 lightweight backpackers to sleep in the backcountry.

Why Double Hammock Camping Is Better

As lightweight and ultralight backpacking becomes more popular, so too do hammocks.

It’s really no surprise as it just makes more sense from a practical and a comfort level.

It’s not impossible to imagine that in a few years most lightweight backpackers will be camping in hammocks.

Below are some reasons why we believe double hammock camping is set to explode in 2024:

More Lightweight

Whether it’s a single or a double, a hammock will always weigh less than a tent.

A good bivy sack can be comparable but isn’t in the ballpark of value you get from a hammock.

Especially double hammocks.

A good double hammock can easily accommodate two people and can hold between 400 and 500 pounds.

Some backpacking couples will opt for 2 separate hammocks.

In my opinion, this is unnecessary as most double hammocks weigh between 1 and 2 pounds and easily pack down.

This saves you from surprise weather or any curious squirrels.

Quick installation

Installing a double hammock is a breeze.

I’d argue for the beginning backpacker it may even be easier than setting up your first tent.

Below are general directions to set up your hammock.

Note: Make sure to consult your hammock’s manual for any specific modifications.

1. Find 2 trees around 12-15 feet apart
2. Tie your straps around the tree around 6 feet high.
3. Attempt to keep the angle of your ropes at 30 degrees.
4. Try to keep the hammock a little over a foot to 15 inches off the ground, or simply no higher than you’re willing to fall.

Strong and Versatile

Double hammocks are usually stronger and more durable than single hammocks.

This makes sense as they’re made to accommodate the weight of two people.

That’s not to say that single hammocks aren’t strong.

You’d be hard-pressed to find a single hammock that can’t handle 400 pounds.

Aside from just sleeping, you can also use your double hammock as a hanging couch.

Again, this is great for the camping couple or even buddies cracking a few beers.

Double hammocks come in handy, especially for the solo backpacker.

It will offer enough space for you, your pack and any other personal items.

Comfort

Aside from convenience and lightweight portability a double hammock’s comfort is second to none.

No more dreading the bumpy, hard ground from sleeping in a tent.

It will not only reduce the weight of your backpack but also increase the fun and comfort of your trip.
