If you’re looking to take your backpacking game to the next level, whether solo or with a partner, then you must entertain the benefits of double hammock camping.

Solo hammocks are becoming all the rage in the ultralight backpacking community, but traveling with a 2 person hammock is opening up entirely new adventure opportunities for backpackers traveling in pairs.

Aside from being the lightest shelter you can pack for your trip, they’re versatile, easy to set up and most of all…

We recommend hammocks for pretty much any adventurer who’s looking for backpacking tent alternatives

Double Hammock Camping For The Adventurous Couple

We spend a lot of time writing about the solo lightweight backpacker, but we realize that sometimes you want some company.

The trail can get lonely, even if that’s what you’re looking for.

Sometimes you just want to experience the beauty of the outdoors with another human.

In fact, most backpackers could agree that sharing the experiences you gain on the trail is just more enjoyable with another person.

But as beautiful and exciting as outdoor experiences can be to share, resting for the night is a different story.

Truth be told so many 2 person backpacking tents cant even hold 2 people.

This makes finding the right size shelter for 2 people a frustrating experience.

KAMMOK Roo Camping Hammock (Nakuru Blue) - The World's Best...
The Kammok Roo Double Camping Hammock unfolds to 10’L x 5’7″W for a good inner capacity while compressing down to 5.5″L x 6.5″H x 4.5″W.

What works for one might not work for the other, especially if your 2 completely different sizes.

Hammocks, on the other hand, are usually 8-9 feet long and contour to your body type.

This creates an incredibly relaxing and spacious experience for both people in the hammock.

Double hammock camping is the most accommodating way for 2 lightweight backpackers to sleep in the backcountry.

Why Double Hammock Camping Is Better

As lightweight and ultralight backpacking becomes more popular, so too do hammocks.

ENO Eagles Nest Outfitters - DoubleNest Hammock, Portable...
The ENO Eagles Nest Outfitters is ultralight at only 19 ounces while at the same time having the ability to hold up to 400 pounds.

It’s really no surprise as it just makes more sense from a practical and a comfort level.

It’s not impossible to imagine that in a few years most lightweight backpackers will be camping in hammocks.

Below are some reasons why we believe double hammock camping is set to explode in 2018:

More Lightweight

Whether it’s a single or a double, a hammock will always weigh less than a tent.

A good bivy sack can be comparable but isn’t in the ballpark of value you get from a hammock.

Especially double hammocks.

A good double hammock can easily accommodate two people and can hold between 400 and 500 pounds.

Some backpacking couples will opt for 2 separate hammocks.

In my opinion, this is unnecessary as most double hammocks weigh between 1 and 2 pounds and easily pack down.

Winner Outfitters Double Camping Hammock takes less than 3 minutes to hang on a tree or nearby objects using the included ropes, strips and carabiners. Best of all, it costs under $30.

Winner Outfitters Double Camping Hammock includes straps, carabineers and a carrying bag to total just over 2 pounds altogether.

Also, 2 separate hammocks give you more of a chore of finding more trees to prop up the hammocks.

Contrast this to a tent which can easily weigh anywhere between 3-6 pounds.

To fit 2 people as comfortably as a hammock does you may get closer to 7 pounds.

Set The Mood

Double hammock camping can be romantic for you and your partner.

We like to get down and dirty here at Adventure Sacks.

But like the Monster Ballads commercial says, every bad boy has a soft side.

What couple can resist lying in a double hammock, suspended above the ground surrounded by the wonder of nature?

Cool breezes, birds chirping, brooks babbling.

You enjoy nature’s scenic beauty in the daytime and fall asleep under the stars at night.

Imagine sharing these moments with someone you love.

In order to make this romantic situation more perfect be sure to opt for a sheltered double hammock.

Lawson Hammock Blue Ridge Camping Hammock was rated #1 By Backpacker and Outside and American Survival Guide and was the Winner of the prestigious Gear Of The Year Award.

This saves you from surprise weather or any curious squirrels.

Quick installation

Installing a double hammock is a breeze.

I’d argue for the beginning backpacker it may even be easier than setting up your first tent.

Below are general directions to set up your hammock.

Note: Make sure to consult your hammock’s manual for any specific modifications.

  1. Find 2 trees around 12-15 feet apart
  2. Tie your straps around the tree around 6 feet high.
  3. Attempt to keep the angle of your ropes at 30 degrees.
  4. Try to keep the hammock a little over a foot to 15 inches off the ground, or simply no higher than you’re willing to fall.

Strong and Versatile

Double hammocks are usually stronger and more durable than single hammocks.

This makes sense as they’re made to accommodate the weight of two people.

That’s not to say that single hammocks aren’t strong.

You’d be hard-pressed to find a single hammock that can’t handle 400 pounds.

Aside from just sleeping, you can also use your double hammock as a hanging couch.

Again, this is great for the camping couple or even buddies cracking a few beers.

Double hammocks come in handy, especially for the solo backpacker.

It will offer enough space for you, your pack and any other personal items.

You can rest easy in your double hammock camping experience knowing that you’re secure and comfortable with one or more people

Aside from convenience and lightweight portability a double hammock’s comfort is second to none.

No more dreading the bumpy, hard ground from sleeping in a tent.

Hammocks are actually proven to be better for your back, which of course means better for your whole body.

The big thing to remember is that you and your partner have to lie at a slight angle.

You’ll also get more space from lying this way.

The cost of a double hammock is actually not that much more expensive than a single hammock.

Most double hammocks cost under $100, many costs under $70.

There are even some double hammocks for under $20.

HONEST OUTFITTERS Single & Double Camping Hammock with...
Honest Outfitters Single & Double Camping Hammock With Hammock Tree Straps are one of the least expensive double camping hammocks available.

They’re so inexpensive that it makes sense just to have 1 or 2 on hand to give to someone in your party who’s missing a shelter.

If nothing else it’s an investment in your lightweight camping habit.

If you’re planning a trip for 2 or even a big group excursion, everyone can stay lean in the wallet by opting for double hammocks.

Ditch The Air Mattress

A lot of tent campers choose to carry an air mattress to make their sleep more comfortable.

However, this will add a lot of additional weight.

Neolite Double Camping Hammock is 10 ft 6 in (long) x 6 ft 6 in (wide) making big enough to comfortably fit 2 people

Even a lightweight pad can add some weight and bulkiness to your pack.

Buying a double hammock allows you to avoid carrying these air mattresses.

You can lighten your pack without sacrificing the comfort for you and your partner.

Not to mention the frustration of blowing up and packing down a bulky air mattress.

Double Hammock Camping Is Just Better

Having a reliable shelter for you and a 2nd while saving weight and providing convenience at one time seemed impossible.

But by opting for double hammock camping, your trip can be made more comfortable and more fun.

Even if you’re traveling alone a double hammock will provide a ton of value.

You’ll get additional space and various other advantages without any extra cost or extra weight in your pack.

So, from my personal experience, if you’re looking to get out into nature and share an adventure with a loved one, or even a good friend we recommend you try double hammock camping.

It will not only reduce the weight of your backpack but also increase the fun and comfort of your trip.
