2 Person Hammock Tents For Your Next Adventure

A 2 person hammock tent will change the way you view backpacking.

Especially if you go ultralight these can be a game changer.

These hammocks are lightweight, versatile, and perfect for both sleep and leisure.

A good 2 person hammock tent can fit you plus a friend, a lover, a dog, or just you by yourself.

If you’re looking for a fun way to hit the trail, then a 2 person hammock tent might be a good call.

What Is A 2 Person Hammock Tent

2 person hammock tent for storage, gonex hammock, hammock for camping, best ultralight hammock

Essentially a 2 person hammock tent is the hybrid of a hammock and a tent.

In recent years the ultralight hammock has grown in popularity amongst the ultralight backpacking crowd.

They’re lightweight, they’re comfortable and ergonomic, and they’re fun.

They’re the one ultralight backpacking shelter you actually don’t mind spending leisure time in.

Ultimately these hammock companies have seen the surge in popularity and have made these ultralight hammocks as convenient to use as possible.

ENO, Eagles Nest Outfitters DoubleNest Lightweight Camping...
The ENO Eagles Nest Outfitters is ultralight at only 19 ounces while at the same time having the ability to hold up to 400 pounds.

This includes turning them into mini-hotels.

Of course, you still have the option to rig up a hammock and simply lie down for a night’s rest.

But in 2020 you now have the ability to add specially made pads and tarps and flies.

You can conceivably turn your simple hammock into a floating hotel, equipped to handle even harsh weather conditions.

2-Person Hammock vs 2 Person Tents

hammocks in the woods, gonex hammock, hammock for camping, best ultralight hammockLet’s be honest.

For 2 campers, a 2 person ultralight backpacking tent just won’t cut it.

Most are barely big enough for 1 big camper, let alone 2 normal size backpackers.

Especially once you factor in your gear, you find that a tent alone can be quite inconvenient.

We encourage 2 backpackers traveling together to upgrade to a 3 person backpacking tent.

But then the weight in your pack starts to increase.

Kammok Roo Camping Hammock (Nakuru Blue) - The World's Best...
The Kammok Roo Double Camping Hammock unfolds to 10’L x 5’7″W for a good inner capacity while compressing down to 5.5″L x 6.5″H x 4.5″W.

To alleviate these frustrations we recommend ditching your tent for an ultralight 2 person hammock tent.

Most 2 person hammock tents are 8-9 feet long and stretch out enough to give each person more than enough space.

For the romantic couple, the hammock sets the mood by allowing you to fall asleep under the stars while gently rocking to the sounds of nature.

If you’re just out with a friend, the 2 person hammock tent gives each camper plenty of their own space.

If you’re traveling alone, then the 2 person hammock tent gives you your own personal mini suite.

You get all of this comfort at a small fraction of the weight of a 2 person tent.

How a 2 Person Hammock Tent Works

At first, the 2-person hammock tent seems intimidating.

GRAND TRUNK Print Hammock - Double Hammock for Indoor and...
The Grand Trunk Double Parachute Nylon Print Hammock is 10.5L x 6.5W so it can sleep 2 average size people fine (it maxes capacity at 150kg) or 1 person plus gear very comfortably.

However, they’re actually easier to set-up than you may think.

As long as you have 2 trees that are 12-15 feet apart then you can set up a hammock.

Set up

gonex hammock, hammock for camping, best ultralight hammock

For a typical hammock set up, you’re going to tie your straps around 2 sturdy, solid trees 6 feet high.

Make sure the trees are in good shape, not too old, with thick trunks.

Make sure you specifically use hammock straps with webbing that are 1-2 inches wide.

Attach the hammock to the straps via the carabiners and tighten to ropes to a 30-degree angle.

Make sure the hammock is 1-2 feet off the ground leaving enough slack so the hammock isn’t too taut.

As a rule of thumb never raise a hammock higher than your willing to fall. Also, don’t fall.

Neolite Double Camping Hammock is 10 ft 6 in (long) x 6 ft 6 in (wide) making big enough to comfortably fit 2 people

The set-up can be slightly different in a 2 person hammock tent.

A lot of the units will come with some extra poles and suspension lines to create separate quarters.

Most newer hammocks come with a rainfly or at least have the ability to easily attach one to the hammock.

If not you can get a specific hammock tarp that works just as well.

If you have mesh netting attached make sure the rainfly is not touching the mesh.

Otherwise, you may get damp if rain comes in the night.

To add warmth add in a few quilts and/or a sleeping pad.

ENO - Eagles Nest Outfitters Ember Hammock UnderQuilt,...
The ENO Eagles Nest Outfitters – Ember 2 Under Quilt packs down into a small compression sack to take up very limited space in your pack at 15″ x 8″ making it very convenient to carry..

Once fully set you’ll have yourself an extremely comfortable, warm, weatherproof shelter that can easily fit 2 people.

Separate Sleeping Quarters

A lot of good 2 person hammocks have storage pockets for your gear.

Ideally, you want to be able to keep your pack in the hammock with you.

Not every hammock offers this, but the better the hammock the more features.

The solo backpacker will be able to have one quarter for sleep and another to store your pack.

It almost feels like having your own 2 bedrooms hanging apartment.

What to Look For When Buying a 2-Person Hammock Tent

There are several key points to look out for when buying a 2-person hammock tent.

PRICE

Like any other lightweight backpacking shelter, a hammock can range from super cheap to expensive.

A decent 2 person hammock tent should not have to cost you a fortune.

You can find a good quality hammock easily for under $100.

You can actually find plenty of hammocks for under $50.

However the more features you add on to the 2 person hammock tent, the more you can drastically enhance your experience.

Not to mention some cheaper tents don’t last very long.

You’ll end up spending more money to replace a cheap hammock than if you would’ve spent the money for better initial quality.

The last thing you want is to buy something too cheap only to have to replace it every year.

Weight and Capacity

Make sure to check the capacity and weight that your hammock tent can handle.

Not all hammock tents are created equal, especially when it comes to 2 person hammock tents, some can hold more weight than others.

WINNER OUTFITTERS Double Camping Hammock - Lightweight Nylon...
Winner Outfitters Double Camping Hammock includes straps, carabineers and a carrying bag to total just over 2 pounds altogether.

This is good to know especially if you plan on storing some gear in the hammock with you and your partner.

Remember to take into account how heavy the whole package is including the extra poles, flies and suspension straps.

While the hammock themselves can be lightweight, more features can start to weigh down your pack.

If the weight is too much, check for other models that might offer lighter poles or material.

Dimensions and Straps

Not all 2 person tent models are created with the same length and width.

Know what measurements work best for you and your partner.

If the dimensions seem like they will be cramped for you and another person, continue to look for one that may have a bigger capacity.

Also be sure to keep your gear in mind and think about how much you plan to store in your tent.

Some straps that are included with certain hammocks can be quite cheap.

Lawson Hammock Blue Ridge Camping Hammock and Tent (Rainfly...
Lawson Hammock Blue Ridge Camping Hammock was rated #1 By Backpacker and Outside and American Survival Guide and was the Winner of the prestigious Gear Of The Year Award.

Knowing this, many experienced backpackers actually choose to carry a trusted brand of decent straps.

Most companies will provide straps with their 2 person hammock tent, but be sure to read the make and material.

Not all straps may be long enough for your camping needs either, which is why it is important to check length and ability.

2 Person Hammock Tent Accessories

One of the biggest complaints about hammocks is the cold underneath and the hot on top.

When buying a 2-person hammock tent you should look into adding an under quilt.

A double layer hammock or 4-season hammock will also provide proper insulation.

However, you may want to find a good balance between the hot and cold that works for you.

The benefit of the cooling aspect of hanging in the trees is better airflow in the summer, but it may not work as well once fall and winter camping season comes.

Revolutionizing Lightweight Backpacking

A 2-person hammock tent can revolutionize the way you camp and the way you experience the great outdoors.

Hammock tents provide a great view with low impact to the environment and less weight in your backpack.

They allow you and a second person will to experience nature in a whole new way.

With new technology that has 4-season capability, we can all benefit from the ability to comfortably camp all year long.

Lightweight backing won’t ever be the same, and backpacking couples can rest easy with the reliability and comfort of a 2 person hammock tent.
